SUMMARY

  • Mostly, we feel old to start new things because the pressure society puts on us. The music industry usually prefers to invest on young people, because that is good for their business.
  • It is never to late to follow our dreams, and find ways to be fulfilled doing what we love.
  • Being older gives us more experience and confidence.
  •  "Talent is your interest. If you're interested on this, it means that you have talent." - Silvia Goldberg.
  • Learning a new skill depends on you,  on how much time, energy and motivation are you willing to spend on it.
  • It is never too late to start following your dreams

Are you too old to learn how to sing?

My name is Lorna Earnshaw. I'm a voice coach, singer, songwriter, online entrepreneur and author of the bestseller Amazon "Speak out!". I've already helped more than 60,000 people to sing and speak better through the internet and more than 350 students in my private sessions in the past 15 years.

I want to tell you that you are not old to learn how to sing, okay? That's the main thing that I want. I want you to understand today. And why I'm saying this? Maybe you thought that you've missed out. That you should have started earlier when you were young when it was a right time.

Now, let me ask you something: what is being old? Because I don't know what is your age. Maybe you are 16. Maybe you are 50. I don't know. I cannot see you in person. But I remember that I had a kid, a 16 year old teenager, coming to my class and telling me: "Oh, I know I am too old to learn" and I was like "You are too old? You are 16 years old! You're not old! This is a great time for you to learn how to sing". And I had people saying this when they're 50. And they were having the time of their lives.

Me, I started really understanding how to use my voice, and I was able to be fulfilled and singing the songs that I wanted to sing only at 22 years old. Before that I was super super stressed out and super frustrated. I had a vocal disorder that was detected at 17. And it took me around two years just to fix that, because I was in such a bad state.

But still most of the people feel that they're missing out, that they are too old. And I want to tell you and share with you what is my experience when it comes to this. First of all, I think that this age thing has to do with pressure in society, which is something that we are unfortunately dealing with every day in which it seems that you're either too young or too old all the time, right?

You're either too young to do things when you're a teenager or you're too old. Or what I felt is that I felt that when I was younger I didn't have the experience so I didn't have the confidence. I didn't know what I was doing. And then when you end up having the confidence and the knowledge then you're way too old. So that you can have an experience. And this is something that being in Los Angeles in Hollywood. I experience in a very very strong way.

Hollywood, Los Angeles, this is the place where the big companies, the big record labels, the TV channels, they're looking for stars. And kids stars. Kids that they can manage and that they can train in order to build the people that they need and the artists that they need as a business. Because if they start working with this artist what they are still kids, they are a long investment. This investment is going to last for years and years to come. And the kids will be able to be trained according to what they need, which is a good thing for their business, for their commercial interests. And we end up suffering from that.

I don't know if you guys want to be a famous singer or not. Well, if you want to be a famous singer and you're already older, and maybe at 20 or 25. Honestly, I think the odds of having a record deal with a major record label are very small, because they don't want to invest in people that they consider old. I know of a singer, she is a famous singer and she lied about her age. She was 25 and in order for her to get a record deal with with major record label, she said that she was 20, because that was the only way that she could get the deal. So this pressure is real. This pressure is real.

So I want to talk to you now that we just are not talking about this commercial thing, in which I still believe that there is a way around, which has been an independent artist. I think that you can get a lot of things done at any age as an independent artist. If you start working on your marketing, if you start using the social media. You don't need a record label to make something happen to you and to fulfill your dreams as a singer. This is the way that I see it.

But I just wanted to mention this commercial part at the beginning. And now I want to talk to you and talk to your heart. Talk to the fulfillment of your dreams, that is waiting inside of your heart. Something that is waiting to come out and to express itself. And this is my favorite part honestly because I am a voice coach.

I've already worked with professionals. And I've already worked with people who are not professionals and who don't want to be professionals. And in my experience I'd rather work with people who maybe they are not so committed commercially with the success, but people who love to sing and who love to develop their talent or maybe deal with something that they have in their hearts.

Maybe that's how you feel. This is something that you've always loved to do and you never had the experience to do. Maybe you didn't have the courage. Or maybe someone has told you that you didn't have the talent. Maybe someone told you that you were tone-deaf. Or they made fun of your voice. They said that you didn't have the talent to learn how to sing. And those things can really hurt us and can really frustrate us. And many times we put that aside in our lives for years and years and years.

And then maybe you're in your 30s or more 40s or 50s and you realize that you would love to learn how to sing. Maybe not to become the next Miley Cyrus or the next Justin Bieber. Not all of us are looking for that. But you would love to learn how to express yourself, how to free your voice, how to feel the joy of singing. That in my experience is one of the most amazing things that we can do in our lives. This is what I think.

And in my case as I said before. Until I was 22 or 23 years old, I wasn't able to do it. And I had to learn conceptually all these things, all these techniques, how to use my voice, how to use the breathing. And of course, it's a completely different approach from when you were 10 or 9 years old.

Personally, I don't work with kids because I work in the concept. I work in the technique. And that is way to challenging for a kid to understand, because they usually work with like playing games and imitating, and that's not what I do. I like to work with people like you, who can understand my ideas and where are all these exercises coming from. That's what my method is about.

And just a hundred percent honest on this, I have never not even one student, I've already worked with more than 350 students in the past 15 years, this year 2019 is going to be 16 years since I started teaching vocals. I've never had one student who didn't improve, who didn't free their voices through the vocal technique. Some of my students had, it was more challenging for them. Some other students felt that this it was faster and easier.

The most challenging thing is the musicality, not the technique. So many times what you need to do is just work on the vocal technique so that you can free your voice, and your musicality will be able to express. In other cases what you need to do is to work on your musicality, because you didn't have the opportunity to start working on that before.

And right now I want to quote one of the teachers that I had, they made a huge impact in my life. Her name is Silvia Goldberg, late Silvia Goldberg. She was one of my first composition teachers when I was 17 years old at the conservatory of music, classical music in Argentina, where I studied for years classical guitar. And she used to tell us: "Talent is your interest. If you're interested on this, it means that you have talent."

People who are not interested in doing this, those are the people who don't have the talent. If you love this. If you want to feel the joy of singing. And if you're watching this video right now instead of being doing something else, playing video games, this means that you have the talent, because you have the interest.

When starting with the right exercises you will be able to develop your voice. And as I said before you need the right exercises, you need the right routines of exercises in order to learn how to use your voice. And in other videos you will watch about if it is possible for you to learn how to sing. And of course it is possible, but it depends on you. On how much you want to invest on this. And I'm not only speaking about the financial part. I'm speaking about your time, your energy and your motivation as well.

Now, singing will not age, your body will age, your singing will not age. However, the strength and the consistency of our diaphragm, it goes down when we get older, that is why it's important for us to keep our health and to keep on working out on these vocal exercises in order to keep our diaphragm stronger. And in case and when you start practicing these exercises you will be able to be singing for many many many years, even if you're 90 years old, okay? You're still going to have that strength in your diaphragm that will be able to support your singing.

There are many examples: Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, were amazing singers and they are still are amazing singers. And singing comes from your heart. Singing comes from your heart, doesn't come from your body. Your body is the instrument. But your singing comes from the expression of your heart and this is what we're looking for.

And maybe if you're thinking right now: "oh, this is too late for me. I'm 40 years old. I should have done this when I was 20. This is too late". I want to tell you something: what's gonna happen in 10 years? In 10 years you gonna look back and you're still gonna be 50. You're still gonna be older. But the difference is that you might have done this or not. What will happen if you one day look back and you say I should have done this when I was 40? Is that what you're gonna say when you're 50? I think about that, okay? Because I know that in 10 years I will be older and I know that I will look back and I will think about all the things that maybe I missed out on. So giving you an advice, start today. It's not late if you take action now, okay?

In my programs what I love to do is to deal with people who have these dreams. And honestly, this is my favorite part. I did it with people maybe that were kind of frustrated after trying in other situations with other teachers, maybe in in a different environment, and giving them hope, and just make them dream their dreams come true through the vocal technique. The rest is in your heart, okay?

So in case you haven't done this yet, here in the comment section below you're gonna find a link, in that link you will be able to sign up for free lessons in which you're gonna have a lot of information about how the vocal technique works. And you can start experimenting and freeing your voice.
